The number of craft cideries in the state more than doubled to 43 from 15 over the past two years. The Keystone State ranks sixth in the nation in it's number of cider producers and the state's cider sales reached more than $25 million in 2016.
That should be no surprise given that Pennsylvania ranks fourth among top apple-producing states. The abundance of orchard-fresh apples makes the Keystone State a perfect place to craft the delicious adult beverage.
Pennsylvania's hard cider heritage actually dates back to the 1600's and played a key role in developing the then-colony's agricultural economy. Cider grew to a major business in the 1800's but its rise was cut short by prohibition. Over the past decade, Pennsylvania craft cider has been making a comeback.
