Household Items We Make Immortal, But Shouldn't
We are so cautious and aware of expiration dates for some items rather than others. Just because it doesn’t have a stamp on it does not mean it’s meant to last forever. Start keeping track of when to replace household items like these to live a much healthier life.
Fire extinguisher: every 5–15 years
This item is really easy to forget because it does last a while, but every so often it’s a good idea to check the pressure gauge attached to see if it’s in the green zone—an indication that it has not yet expired. If the gauge is not in the green, it’s probably time for a new one.
Sponges: every week
Because they are usually damp for a while after use, and we typically use them multiple times a day for dishes,kitchen sponges are a hot spot for bacteria.
Toilet brush: once a year
This should make sense because of where we use it, right? Unfortunately, this host for bathroom bacteria is often forgotten because of the frequency it’s used. However, it’s important to replace at least once every 12 months.
Pillows: 6 months to a year
We’re not talking about your pillow case, alone, but your whole pillow. As clean as you might think you are, after resting your head there for a few hours every night, of course bacteria will gather. Keep yourself safe from any bad bacteria by washing pillows often, along with your sheets.
Couch cushions: every 18 months to a few years
If you can wash your couch cushions, then they should last a little longer. If you are unable to wash them, you should be replacing them about every 18 months.
Plastic containers: every six months
Now, this one can be tricky. How you use your containers (if u microwave them, damage them, scratch them, or warp their shape), can determine their life expectancy. If you are particularly hard on your plastic ware, you may want to consider replacing them every few months.
Pans: every 3 years, depending on the material
Pans can last longer if they are stainless steel, rather than non-stick, but if you notice any damage to the pan at all, replace right away to avoid getting food stuck in the scratches—or vice versa—pieces of the pan in your food!
Plastic water bottles: once a year
Metal containers or even glass tend to last longer and doesn’t require yearly replacement. They are much easier to clean and don’t carry as much harmful bacteria as plastic.
First aid kit: every 3-5 years
Everything inside should have an expiration date, so it’s best to check all the individual items every year or so to see if it’s time to buy a replacement. You can always leave the items that aren’t yet expired, and replace the ones that have.
Air filters: will vary upon household conditions
Take account of factors like how many people you live with, pets, and allergies. If there’s only two of you in a house, no pets, and no allergies, then every 6 months to a year will do. If you have kids, pets, and allergies, then it is beneficial to change the filter as often as possible, like every few months.
It is in you and your family’s best interest to stay on top of these items so you can live in a clean environment with peace of mind.
